WORLD HERITAGE

The fertile lands and abundant waters were the reason why the Cistercian monks settled in this region of Tavora-Varosa. Wouldn’t also be by the extraordinary beauty of these landscapes and even divine inspiration, as the legend says? The truth is that their passage resulted in a vast and rich built heritage. It’s worth visiting the convent of S. João de Tarouca and the Monastery of Salzedas for its beauty and inside richness. Apart from churches and monasteries the strength and power of the Cistercian monks are also reflected on the Ucanha Bridge and Tower . The Tower was built for the tolling of the Salzedas  “Couto” . According to the legend it was also built so that, when the Bishop of Lamego passed under the arch, the abbot could stand in a higher position than him. It seems that these laborious monks forgot their primitive ideal of poverty!  To the encounter of this beautiful scenery of vineyards, cellars dug into the rock and orchards in bloom, beautiful churches and monasteries is another region of green terraces crossed by an immense river, very quiet, like a silver serpent, whose beauty is so extraordinary that it is World Heritage . The Douro Region crosses, in Britiande, with the Tavora Varosa as in a deep embrace of friendship ; so closed that a property in the neighboorhood of CASA DE SANTO ANTONIO DE BRITIANDE has the two denominations of origin. Smooth white wines, delicate and delicious sparkling wines on one side and full bodied reds and Ports recognized throughout the world on the other side. Come and see for yourself !
